After the fall of the „Iron curtain“ at the initiation of Professor Fritz Sauter from the Technical University of Wien a successful seminar called “Blue Danube Symposium on Heterocyclic Chemistry” was organized in Vienna, which in the subsequent years with the alternating organization by the Czech, Hungarian, Slovakian, and Slovenian colleagues continued to grow and flourish. To acknowledge the importance of heterocyclic chemistry beyond synthetic methodology development a small but significant modification to the name was agreed in 2022 resulting in its present name “Blue Danube Symposium on Heterocycles in Chemistry”.
